This is the first in a series of posts tracking the race for a new California State Superintendent of Public Instruction (SSPI). In California, 42% of the state budget is devoted to K-12 education. The SSPI is an elected official who oversees the State Department of Education for K-12 education and speaks for the State on education issues.

One of his powers is the appointment of State Administrators and State Trustees for school districts at various levels of financial trouble. I live in a district, the West Contra Costa Unified School District, with a State Trustee (currently Linda Grundhoffer) who has a veto power over budget decisions by the school district.

In the June 2010 primary election, the next SSPI will be elected to this non-partisan office. I used a Web site called Politics1 to find who’s running. I left in the descriptions of the people from that Web site.

Larry Aceves – Ex-School District Superintendent & Educator
Diane Lenning – Teacher, Author & GOP Activist
Francisco Reveles – College Professor
Gloria Romero – State Sen., Ex-State Assemblywoman & Ex-L.A. Community College Trustee
Tom Torlakson – State Sen., Ex-State Assemblyman, Ex-Antioch City Commissioner & Ex-Teacher
Henry Williams – Teacher, D.Ed. Doctoral Candidate & USAF Veteran

In the table below, I include links to the Web sites for the candidates from Politics1 along with what I’ve been able to find in terms of Facebook and Twitter presence for the candidates.
